No words...

I am not happy right now. I feel angry and betrayed, but, most of all, I feel hurt.

I went to see the lady at the Islamic store, and she told me that one of the women at the mosque was basically attacking me on the "super sekret squirl Niqabi Salafi web group". She doesn't post there much, but she reads it a lot, and she said that this woman had been asking a lot of questions and stirred up a bunch of the salafi niqabis about me, a non-Muslim, wearing niqab. Evidently, a lot of those women don't wear niqab because they want to, but because their husbands make them.

So what is the big flippin' deal? Are they all fired up because they don't get that a woman might want to wear niqab of her own free will? Well, last time I checked, this was a free country. I don't go places or do anything as a niqabi that might cast a "bad light" on the Muslim community here, so they have no real grounds for objection as far as I'm concerned.

Anyway, the lady told me about it because she didn't want me to be caught completely off-guard if I went to jummah on Friday and this woman jumped on my case about it.

I feel really hurt about it (what's happened, not the nice sister warning me). Instead of reaching out and encouraging me and helping me to learn and understand more about Islam - like you lovely Muslimahs and other knowledgeable friends here do- they're slinking around and stabbing me in the back. These women don't even KNOW me!!!

I know I should forgive them and pray that God will open their eyes to the wrongness of their actions (especially the ringleader). I'll say some prayers and hopefully in a little while I won't be so angry, and maybe God will open my heart and help me to forgive them.

I'm not going to wear niqab for a while. I don't want to feel the least bit connected with those women, and I have no intention of going to jummah on Friday.

  1. OMG! I am so pissed off on your behalf! HOW DARE THEY???!!

Whose butt do you want us to cyber kick?? tell us! or should I feel bad for them that they are forced to wear it? dang it, am confused.

As a Muslim Niqabi I am happy that you find the same beauty in the niqab as I do. Maybe they are jealous? I got that before. Maybe you look stunning, nay, GAWGEOUS and they feel threatened?

  2. Oh, I bet you aren't happy right now :( :( :( :( :( :( I don't know if this should keep you from wearing niqab, but yeah, I can see why you might want to attend jummah somewhere where you don't have to keep company with these folks...

  3. dude i skipped the last bit of your post cuz I was so mad and I just finished reading it over. I don't think they should keep you from wearing whatever the heck you want to wear. You are giving them too much power. They are bullies don't let yourself be bullied by the likes of them. DO YOU GIRL! If that means Niqab or no niqab let it be YOU who decide not them.

  4. I'm in with the cyber-kicking party!

I'm positive that they're jealous - they can't stand to see that you are strong enough to wear niqab of your own free will and choice and in spite of what people might think, do, or say. Hijab OR niqab is a woman's choice and no one has a say in it but her.

That was nice of the shop sister to warn you though. :)

WE heart you muchly so poo on them! *hug*

  5. Ugh that is so rude! Good thing the shop sister told you.

I can't believe they are acting that way. I guess women don't get better as the get older. They still stay mean to each other.

Well who cares about them anyway. Stupid caddy women.

  7. That is so wrong of them. Are there other mosques in your area? Maybe you can find a more welcoming community.

  8. "super sekret squirl Salafi web group"
Well, that's not creepy at all.

Keep on keeping on. Those bad eggs have vices of the heart and vices of the tongue up one wall and down the other. When it comes to the Last Day, they're going to have lots of 'splainin' to do. From what I've seen of this type of person (there's one in every community), they try to bring you down because you have purer faith than them (wearing Niqaab for Allah SWT alone) and they're jealous. They're jealous because that means they can't be holier than thou than you and *gasp* that's the worst thing EVER! *rolls eyes*

I'm not really a big fan of Salafi dogma in the first place; I've met some fantastic sisters that ascribe to it, but I've met hundreds more who have tried to beat me over the head with their interpretations (some of which were actually wrong, versus different). Maybe hang out with some more moderate sisters for the beginning?

  9. *puts on butt-kicking boots*

Who do you want us to hit, and how hard?

Seriously, though, that's just *wrong*. I tend to find the people who label themselves 'Salafi' to be very arrogant and intollerant - much more so than any other Muslim I've encountered. They're right, and everyone else is wrong, and if you don't do it *exactly* the way they want - *bam*. I'm sure they can't all be like that, but the ones I've come across are.

It's up to you, but I hate the thought of them 'winning' by driving you away from niqaab. I'd continue to wear niqaab, but maybe look for a different mosque, or just not attend jummah prayers. After all, it's not a requirement for you...

Heh. If you did go and someone said something, you could always just demand that they bring you *proof* that niqaab only belongs to the Muslims. Which, of course, they won't find.

  10. KimDonesia: The lady at the shop personally knows those niqabis, and I'm willing to be she's read a lot of conversations involving husbands and niqab on that web group, too.

  11. I'm sorry to hear this!
I suspect some people wear niqaab to be all conservative and separatist and distance themselves from non-Muslims. So you, a non-Muslim, wearing niqab, have completely foiled that plot.
In any case, they're not worth getting upset over. You don't need friends like that.
Perhaps it isn't so bad... perhaps it's just one or two of the women that have these bad thoughts?
