Freeeeee!, my first real snub, and anti-Twilight

I signed out on terminal leave yesterday, so I'm freeeee! I can wear my hijab and niqab full-time now! *so excited*

Oh, and I have to tell you all what happened earlier today: I got my first outright snub. I've been working at my friend's book store most of the day, shelving books, helping customers, etc. Well, one older man walked in, and I greeted him and asked him if he needed any help finding anything. He walked right by me (didn't even look at me, much less respond), and then went up to another girl who was working and asked her for help finding something. *sigh*

And on another note: I found this anti-Twilight website. I'm sure you've all heard of this book series -- those of you who live in the States, anyway. It's touted by its fans as "the best book EVER". And it's written at a fourth-grade reading level. *sigh* It also promotes abusive relationships based solely on physical appearance as normal, healthy, and even desirable. The characters are shallow (obviously, since their hormones do all the talking, and they label it "love"), but the so-called "relationship" is truly unhealthy. They're obsessive over each other, jealous, the guy stalks the girl (even sitting in her bedroom all night while she sleeps --- "Twihards" - the hardcore fans - say that it's "sweet", but I just think it's creepy). He also forbids her from being around other friends, especially male ones, beats her up but calls it an accident, etcetera etcetera. And they try to pass it off as a "romance". A friend of mine has been in abusive relationships for years, and there's nothing romantic about it. I wish all these deluded people could get that... I found a good article covering all of the above here: http://theantitwilightmovement.webs.com/about.htm

Wow, I have twelve followers now! That's a big jump, and thanks to all of you who have been sharing about me with your friends. : )

  1. Were you wearing niqab or just hijab while working?

I don't get all the hype about Twilight either. I borrowed and read the books, but they are basically fluff and create unhealthy obsessions in a relationship.

  2. I haven't read Twilight on purpose! I went through the whole Harry Potter thing, but really am enjoying travel writing instead...

Sorry about this mean customer! Don't worry though, as those who understand niqab least are usually the most uneducated...Love you lots.

Hi again. Thanks for the comments. About photos, I think I did it by signing in and going to Dashboard - Edit User profile - down to 'Photograph' and load the pic from my computer. Maybe good idea to check you've ticked the user profile privacy boxes (top of 'edit profile' page). I dont think you have done that as no visible e-mail addy on your public profile which I wanted as this is a clunky way of writing back to you. My e mail is Niqaabi12@yahoo.com by the way. Sorry this is about things other than your blog but I can't think of how else to contact you to answer your query. I am NOT much good round computers
    Walaikum salaam, A

  4. I was only wearing hijab! And still he was rude... *sigh* The more I deal with people, the more I love my cats.

Still no luck with the photo. *double sigh*

  5. I don't get people sometimes. I can understand people being uncomfortable with nibab to an extent, but hijab is so not a big deal!

  6. It is a horrible book and movie! promotes domestic violence and unhealthy relationships. I am a domestic violence advocate, and a muslim and I was outraged when I read the book (I had to for work, so I would know when my teen clients talked about Twilight).

    Im sorry you were snubbed!

  7. Jerks live everywhere, apparently.

Also, I completely agree on Twilight. Having grown up in an abusive household, even the hint of it pisses me off, and having all these little teens and adults! touting it as a great romantic relationship...*grah* disgisting.

    Plus, they're *badly* written.

  8. Hi! I just stumbled across your blog and find it very interesting. I am a grad student and am starting work on a project about Muslims in the military, I know that doesn't quite apply to you, but I'd love to talk to you about your experiences as a hijabi/niqabi and your time in the army. You can email me at michelleigh (at) gmail (dot) com.
