Covering

I just randomly thought: Out of all the different ways to cover my hair, why did I choose hijab?

After all, there are all sorts of things for that purpose: hats, snoods, random-things-that-I-have-no-name-for, etc. I guess the fact that I cover Muslim-style is because I was reading about Islam. I like the fact that you can be super-mysterious in all-black, or you can be stylish with jeans and pretty printed scarves but still completely cover.

Some of the more "American" ways of doing so are...to be perfectly honest....in my opinion....are frumpy-looking and/or have "weird cult" connotations. You know, like "compound in the middle of nowhere" cult. Still others that partial-covered just didn't work for me. I was like, "What's the point of covering only a little bit of my hair?" It was a cover-it-all or not-at-all thing for me, but I didn't want to look like I was wearing my granny's clothes. I'm (chronologically) young and I want to look like it, darn it!

  1. I kind of came to the same conclusions with covering. I think that hijab is the most versatile, professional, and stunning way of covering. I never understood the styles that only covered a little of the hair, and never liked the way many of the other styles looked on my face and forehead. The only other style I can pull off is the so-called "spanish hijab."

  2. It's a fancy head wrap which covers only the hair and doesn't hang down. It involves making a bun in your hair (if possible), bringing the ends back behind your head and wrapping them around and around and around the bun. It looks almost like you have a flower attached to the back of your head if you do it right.

PS Good news! I was at the consulate to renew my passport yesterday and there was no problem with declaring a religious head covering and being exempted from revealing my ears in the photo! Everyone was polite and helpful - and there is now a photo shop - reasonably priced, no less - right across the street. Praise the Lord!!!

  3. Cool for you! *claps*

I have to go get a state driver's license on Monday. Totally wearing hijab, oh, yes.

Reminds me, I need to check the expiration date on my passport.

  4. What is this, the season for document renewal? This all reminds me, I have a Polish ID that should probably be renewed too, and they said to show up with pics first, so they can be sent to Warsaw and approved before I submit the renewal application, so it won't be delayed... Guess I'd better do that tomorrow too...
